Our farm in Nessonas

It was purchased in 1999 to serve as a field for research and application of natural farming practices. The natural farming method of Masanobu Fukuoka was chosen. In the course naturally building was added by raising the first house in 2001 and finally energy matters. So the farm ended up being a big workshop of sustainability techniques and viable development.

Today Nessonas counts more than 500 trees raised by seed, seven natural buildings and a lot of other costructions. Electricity is supplied by a wind generator, solar panels and biogas while the control of the building’s temperature is achieved through solar passive systems. Rain water and “grey” water is collected by three lakes and tanks.

The agricultural production of the farm but also of more pieces of rented farmland, is being processed and stored with natural ways to cover the needs of the team and the volunteers while the surplus is ginen for charity or sold.

In the farm two people habit permanenlty and are in charge of its function, volunteers, participants in educational programs and sporadically some members of the team.

Since 1999 the natural farming method is used for cultivating the farmland. Without any great and systematic care a very special and closed ecosystem has developped that numbers more than 400 trees of more than 80 varieties and countless species of annual plants and herbs. The harmonic biodiversity that prevails, protects the ecosystem from diseases and parasites. Additionally, the farm’s microclimate is
The need for heating the interor spaces of the farm is covered 50% by passive solar systems. A 10% is covered by active solar systems while the rest by burning wood in high efficiency heating devices ( rumford fireplaces, rocket mass heaters). Biogas , gas, rocket stoves, wood oven and dutch oven are used for cooking. The needs for burning wood is covered 60% by the farm. Natural methods are used for
In the farm space there are seven buildings and several more structures some utilitarian and others made for educational reasons or for experimention. Our first house was built in 2000 with cob. Now it serves educational needs in eco- turism programs. The second one was built several years later with the help of friends and children of primary school with strawclay. It is used to accommodate the
Having used the space for educative projects with schools, universities snd workshops, we came to realize that a very effective, holistic and pleasant way of education, is to spend some time at the farm, participating in the various activities that take place and get familiar with the viable technologies. Making your own toothpaste gives you the feeling of self- sufficiency. Finally spending some
